Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps throughout Fort Worth, with most installations running between $340 and $680 including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. Most jobs are completed in a single visit. The typical way homeowners discover a failed cap: water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, a rusty cap visible from the yard, or birds waking up somewhere they shouldn’t be. If you’re reading this with a failed or failing DuraFlex cap, you’re in the right place.
Here’s the honest truth about chimney caps in Texas: the weather here is brutal on exposed metal. Between the hail, the wind, and the summer heat that bakes everything on your roof, a chimney cap that would last 15 years in Ohio might give you 7 to 9 years in Fort Worth. DuraFlex makes solid caps, but no cap is permanent. We’ll walk you through what fails, what to look for, and exactly what a replacement costs so you can make a clear-headed decision.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex chimney caps are designed to work with DuraFlex aluminum and stainless steel liner systems, and the cap you need depends on two measurements: the outside diameter of your liner and the inside dimensions of your flue tile (if you have one). The most common sizes we install in Fort Worth are 6-inch and 8-inch caps, but DuraFlex also makes 5.5-inch and 7-inch variants that trip up a lot of homeowners. If you order a 6-inch cap for a 5.5-inch liner, it won’t seat properly, and you’ll get water and embers where you don’t want them.
We’re an independent chimney service company, not a DuraFlex affiliate or distributor, which means we don’t have a reason to push one brand over another. What we can tell you from installing hundreds of caps: the OEM DuraFlex cap is a well-built piece, and there are also quality aftermarket caps from Copperfield that fit DuraFlex liners correctly and often cost less. We’ll show you both options and the price difference before any work starts. The one thing we won’t do is slap a universal cap on there and call it good, because universal fit usually means universal leak.
A quick compatibility note from the field: if your DuraFlex liner was installed before 2010, it’s worth having the cap and liner connection inspected at the same time. Older DuraFlex liners used a slightly different top-plate connection, and pairing a new cap with an aging top plate can leave a gap that’s invisible from the ground but wide open to rain.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water damage on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. This is almost always the cap or the flashing. If water is getting past the cap, it runs down the liner and soaks into the masonry and surrounding drywall. In Fort Worth, we see this most often after the spring storm season.
- Rust streaks running down the chimney chase or brick. A galvanized cap base that’s failing will shed rust after a few heavy rains. By the time you see the streaks, the cap has usually lost its seal around the flue.
- Birds or squirrels inside the chimney. A missing or damaged cap is an open door. We have pulled nests out of flues in the Ryan Place and TCU areas that had been built on top of a collapsed cap screen.
- Drafts or downdrafts when the fireplace isn’t in use. If the cap’s baffle or screen is compromised, wind can push down the flue and send cold air, smoke smell, or soot into the room.
- Visible damage from the yard, driveway, or roof. Hail dents, bent mesh, or a cap that’s shifted off-center. Fort Worth hail season runs from March to May, and we book a lot of cap replacements in June and July when homeowners finally get up on a ladder and see what happened.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fort Worth, a DuraFlex-compatible chimney cap installation typically runs $340 to $680 installed. The range comes down to three things: the cap size, whether the existing top plate or mounting bracket can be reused, and how accessible the chimney is. A ground-level chimney on a single-story home in Wedgwood is a different job from a steep-pitch roof in the hills near Benbrook.
What’s included in our price: the cap, the mounting hardware, removal of the old cap, inspection of the liner top connection, and a photo report showing the installed cap from above. You get a written price before we start, and you get a written guarantee on the install. If anything we installed fails within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the Done Right Promise, and it applies to every cap we install, not just the big jobs. We also carry HeatShield and Gelco materials on the truck for the times when a cap replacement reveals a liner issue that needs attention, so you don’t have to book a second visit.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely do a ground-level visual check: look for rust, dents, or a cap that’s visibly tilted. What we don’t recommend is a DIY removal and reinstall on a roof you can’t walk safely. Chimney caps are not inherently dangerous to replace, unlike gas lines or electrical panels, but the roof is. A fall from even a single-story roofline can be life-changing. Most Fort Worth homes have roof pitches between 6/12 and 9/12, and walking that without professional equipment and training is how people get hurt.
The other thing that goes wrong with DIY cap swaps: the mounting. A cap that’s not seated and sealed correctly will leak, and you won’t know it for six months. We use a sealant rated for high-heat flue applications and we torque everything to spec. If you want to know exactly what we’d do and what it’ll cost before you decide, call us at (682) 900-6393. We’ll walk through what you’re seeing and give you a straight answer, not a sales script. Cory Mitchell says it best: “I’d rather show you a photo of the problem than hand you a bill you don’t understand.”
FAQs
Expect 7 to 9 years in the North Texas climate. The combination of UV exposure, hail, and wind-driven rain shortens cap life compared to milder regions. A stainless cap will generally outlast an aluminum one, and we’ll show you the price difference with no pressure either way.
Small dents and bent screen mesh can sometimes be repaired, but if the cap base is rusted or the seal around the flue is compromised, replacement is the honest fix. We’ll show you a photo of what we found and explain whether a repair makes sense before recommending a replacement. Call (682) 900-6393 and we’ll take a look.
Most cap replacements take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on site. We remove the old cap, clean the mounting surface, seat the new cap, and seal it. You’ll get before-and-after photos so you can see what was done without climbing up there yourself.
We stock the most common DuraFlex-compatible cap sizes on our trucks, including 6-inch and 8-inch models. If your liner requires a less common size or a stainless variant we don’t have on hand, we can typically source it within a day or two. We’ll tell you before you book which scenario applies to you.
